Community is the heart and strength of most African nations. Which is why SAWSO joins together with the local Salvation Army and the communities in need to come up with solutions to improve living conditions, raise skill levels, and create community-wide participation in building local capacities to maintain long-term solutions. This approach works because The Salvation Army is already there, an active and accepted member of the community.

The Salvation Army’s health projects serve nearly 38,000 women and 27,000 children under five years of age in South Africa and 28,000 women and 44,000 children under five years of age in Zambia. The Salvation Army runs similar projects in Congo DRC, Ghana, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

A 72-year-old grandmother in rural South Africa struggled to care for her eight grandsons. After her six daughters died, likely from AIDS, she was left alone without a job to bring up her grandchildren.

Her only granddaughter recently died of dehydration from chronic diarrhea, a preventable condition. SAWSO gave her hope and strength to persevere by providing counseling, shelter, hygiene education, school uniforms, and access to government grants.

A $40 donation will provide bed nets for four families with women and children in rural Zambia. The bed nets will protect them from mosquitoes carrying malaria, the leading cause of childhood death in Zambia.

A $50 donation will help grandmothers in South Africa care for their orphans and vulnerable children by providing necessary items such as clothing, school supplies, school fees, and food supplements.

A $100 donation will support the prevention of the most common childhood illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and malnutrition in Zambia and South Africa through proven, cost-effective interventions.
